Having layout that changes in fixed steps make sizing much easier. The boostrap media queries in the CSS make the container wider in descrete steps (unless the screen is really small). That’s what centers the content on wide displays.
To get that effect I first set up a wrapping around the entire content. There’s a reason that most news papers use columns. When reading on a computer I hate page layouts that make use of the full width of the screen for the text. So what I wanted was a simple, clean layout that set focus on the content and works fine for reading on all kinds of devices. Actually I was quite happy with the clean simple layout I had before – until I opened it on a tablet or even worse on smartphone. I had no intentions to create any graphically exciting design. For the first time when doing web page layout I didn’t have divs jumping around all over the place with a minor change in one place wreaking havoc to the entire layout. Working with Bootstrap is totally awesome. I took the redesign of Passion for Coding as an opportunity to learn Twitter Bootstrap and also to learn som PHP by writing a WordPress theme.
